Welcome to my second blog you all. For our topic we are going to continue to tackle women's reproductive health.
The best way to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy among women who are sexually active is to use effective birth control correctly and consistently. There are many types of contraceptives.
Many teens are having sex at a young age and are not fully aware on ways to protect themselves. Young girls are not educated on how to properly protect themselves. This is a detriment because this makes it easy to contract STI's or an unplanned pregnancy.
A woman's reproductive system is an extensive system in the body. It is responsible for the various stages of reproduction.
In 2015, a total of 229,715 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years this is an indicator that more teens are practicing sex.
Low education and low income levels of a teen’s family, may contribute to high teen birth rates. This is an indicator that health literacy in different population's is low. Socioeconomic class affects the health care that is accessible to others.

Wow, that is a lot for girls aged 15-19. That honestly surprises me. Not knowing how to properly protect yourself just comes to show that the teens having sex probably are either too young or too uneducated. Health literacy definitely needs to be taught more throughout school.
ReplyDeleteI had one health class in high school and I basically learned nothing at all. I have basically learned everything that I know by either talking to my mom or googling things honestly. I have learned a lot in my health classes in college too. I would say that middle school and high school both need more effective health classes. Great post this week!

I am shocked at the high number of unplanned pregnancy. I know that it is definitely not uncommon, but it is crazy to think how young those girls are. I think that the use of contraceptives is very important for people to understand. Even if people know how to correctly use contraceptives, it is important that they are aware of the risks that come with being sexually active. I know that Morgan's sexual health article talked about this, but sexual relations can cause a lot of emotional distress that young people are simply not ready for. I think that along with proper contraceptive use to all demographics, the understanding of how sexual relations can affect our personal lives is very important for young people to understand.
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteI've always known that there are more unplanned pregnancies than there are planned, which is kind of sad but her, that's life. Birth control and contraceptives can help to prevent things such as those. Although all forms of birth control come with risks and complications. I was on Depo for nearly three years because I had a hormonal imbalance and it helped with my periods. But I realized that it was taking a toll on my body and I had to stop. My bone density was weakening and the best thing to do was to quit it altogether. But what may be the case for me, may not be the case for someone else. But I am still an advocate for contraceptives.
That is a huge number of unplanned pregnancies! I didn't know it was that big of a number and that was back in 2015 and we are in 2018 so who knows what the number is now, hopefully the number went down. But I think the main reason why safe sex isn't really practiced because of education doesn't really focus on health that much. From personal experience in high school, the teachers were only required to have one health class for one quarter, and I don't think that is okay because that is not going to be able to teach kids what they need to know about safe sex, STD prevention, etc. I also heard similar experiences from other people who I attend college with now.
